March 6, 2013

Welcome back, friends.

Here are our goals for today's class:
1- Categorize our research.  Identify gaps.  Determine new research goals and roles for next week.
2- Where do the students stand in terms of balanced calendar?  Should we survey?  Create a five
question survey.  (No leading questions, Joey!)
3- Where are we in terms of product and audience?  Let's create a game plan with tentative deadlines.
4- Attending BOE meeting on March 12? (If we do, you have a few options: Attendance can take the place of next week's class and you will have deadlines over Spring Break OR we can class on Wednesday as scheduled with no deadlines over Spring Break.)

At any rate, product and delivery need to be completed by April 10, 2013.  Evaluations (form to be created by next week) will focus on research, survey participation, involvement in community/ school discussions (in person or via email), role in creation of product, and role in delivery of product.

February 20, 2013

I hope you enjoyed your small reprieve, but onwards we go!

Today's Tasks
Overview: We are going to be starting a little project that I think you need to start researching and developing a stance.  The topic? Balanced Calendar for our schools.

1- Let's start by laying down the basics: stakeholders, settings, and a list of what we know (to be true).

2- Consider and Discuss: Who stands to benefit the most from a balanced calendar?  How does the balanced calendar impact each stakeholder?  What is the purpose of a balanced calendar?

3- Plan of Attack: What stakeholder position should we represent?  Why?  What information are we missing or do we need to get in order to justly represent our stakeholder?  Who needs to hear this information?  Where do we go to find this information?  How do we present this information? (Refer to Plan of Attack handout.)

4- Rally the Troops (or assign roles to tasks.  Slightly less exciting, but some things are just not exciting.):  What roles/ positions do we need to assign in order to get work completed successfully?  What time frame are we thinking? What tasks specifically need to be accomplished?

I am really excited and honored to be working on this project with you, my fearless debate team.

January 23, 2013

It must be go-time again!  Here goes...

A few notes:
1- None of you have submitted your published Weeblys for a grade.  TODAY is the day to do so (by 10pm).
2- When are you planning to do your book chat?
3- Keep in mind when tasks are due.

Today's Tasks
1- Surprise Debate Day! You will be a topic and partner randomly.  You will have approximately 15 minutes to research and five minutes to debate using my new time frame (refer to handout).  While you are debating, your peers will be rating your debate using the rubric we had originally agreed upon in the fall.

First, let's check out this video to see how good research and a speedy delivery are the only way, but how speech mannerisms can deter from the message.

2- FAQ time with any upcoming assignments?

January 16, 2013

Word on the street is that many of you have obligations that will prevent you from coming to class.  What I had planned involved everyone to be here; so, we will just work online this week and meet (for sure!) next Wednesday.  Just a fair warning- you will be taping your final debates for the first debate.

Ok, so here are the tasks for this week:
1- Email your proposal for your L/D debate. After I approve the topic, you may construct your outline and works sited page.  This will be due by next Wednesday.
2- Create your speaking cards.  Please note that this is different from your outline.
3- Next Thursday (January 24), I am checking/ grading your Weebly's for the content I have required thus far.  Refer to previous blog posts to make sure you have it all.  Publish your Weebly and post the link to it below.
4- By January 28 meeting, you will need to have taped the first version of the second debate, uploaded the video to YouTube and posted it on Weebly with your reflection 2x5.  These will be evaluated at that time.  I want to watch your videos during our meeting so that everyone can provide some constructive feedback.  The final version of the second debate is due the following Wednesday posted to you Weebly.
5-  You need to determine a date/ time/ chapter(s) for your next book chat.  Here is the room for chat.  Chat is due by the end of January.

Joey- instead of doing the second debate, you are responsible for created a how-to video for L/D debates.  This will require at least two sources and samples of 'debating'.  You may wish to use your peers' work for this project.  This will be due at the same time their final version of the second debate is due.

Be easy; stop by if you need help.

January 9, 2013

Hello, hello.  Bad news- we won't be able to meet this Wednesday due to another obligation I have at the board office.  (I can tell you all are very upset and will miss me endlessly.)  So, I am going to give you a to-do list to keep you busy until out next meeting.

So, here goes:
1- If you haven't made any discussion points on Chapter 6, please do so.  Don't forget to reference page numbers in your posts so that everyone can keep track of where the conversation 'is'.
2- I have tried to find some way to upload videos to the Weebly without using YouTube; however, every method I have found includes buying some type of program.  So, all we have left is YouTube.  Visit/ Join the site; create an account.  Make sure your user name does not reveal anything about you personally such as name and residency/ school.  For those of you who have your videos on my iPad- create an account on YouTube and come see me next Monday or Tuesday to upload the video. Below, I added a tutorial that will help you.

3- After you have uploaded the practice video to YouTube, add it to that page on your Weebly.  Some of you recorded the final video already; just put the final video on the page  as well.  If you haven't recorded the final video, then we can take care of that next Wednesday.  (So, bring your fancy clothes.)
4- For next meeting, bring a proposal for your (you and your partner) next L/ D debate topic.  The proposal should be a 1x5 explaining why you want to do this debate topic and include one research resource that you will be using.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to come down to my room.  (Don't let the freshies scare you away.)  See you January 16.  Remind me to bring you some food.

December 19, 2012

Hello all;

Today is going to be a pretty easy day given you remember you have some work to do for our next meeting (January  9, 2013).

Today's Tasks

1- Upload practice debates to Weebly.  This should take me a few minutes considering I have to do this for all of you; so, help me out by logging into your Weebly, creating a Debate 1 page, write a 1x5 defining Lincoln/ Douglass debate style and purpose and then compose another 1x5 reflecting upon your performance, topic, research, preparedness, etc.

2- Do your Chapter 6 Book Chat.

Homework for Next Meeting
1- Prepare for the REAL DEAL Lincoln/ Douglass debate.  I am recording you again; so, if you had anything to alter or fix, get it straightened out.

2- Schedule a date(s) for your 'cyber' debate or keep the conversation going all break; as long as you have an active role in the conversation, you will receive credit.  Your debate will be on Arming Teachers (research) and it will conducting in the Socratic Seminar Room.  Do your research; don't just rant.
